Understanding Shoulder Stability

The shoulders are highly mobile joints that allow for a wide range of motion, however, this extensive mobility can come at the cost of stability. Shoulder stability refers to the shoulder’s ability to maintain proper alignment and control movement throughout various activities. Weakness or imbalance in the muscles surrounding the shoulder joint can compromise stability, leading to pain, dysfunction, and increased risk of injury.

Shoulder stability is extremely important to the way you function every day, and incurring an injury to your shoulder joint can significantly hinder your ability to perform simple tasks and your favorite activities. That’s where taking the proactive step of participating in shoulder stability workouts comes into play.

Benefits of Shoulder Stability Workouts

Reduced risk of shoulder injuries

Improved posture and biomechanics

  • Strong shoulder stabilizers promote proper alignment and mechanics during movement, reducing the risk of compensatory patterns that can lead to pain and dysfunction.

Enhanced athletic performance

  • A stable shoulder complex is essential for optimal performance in sports and physical activities, allowing for efficient movement and power generation.

Increased functional capacity

  • Improved shoulder stability translates to better functional capacity in daily tasks, such as lifting, reaching, and carrying objects, enhancing overall quality of life.

1. External Rotation with Resistance Band

  • Anchor one end of a resistance band at waist height and hold the other end in your hand. Stand facing the point where the resistance band is anchored. Keeping your elbow of the arm holding the resistance band tucked at your side, rotate your forearm outward against the resistance of the band. Slowly go back to the starting position, repeat 10-15 times per arm.

2. Shoulder Press with Dumbbells

  • Stand with your feet hip-width apart and your knees slightly bent for stability. Hold a pair of dumbbells at shoulder height with your palms facing forward. Press the weights overhead, fully extending your arms. Slowly lower them back down to shoulder height and repeat for 8-12 repetitions. Take a 60-second break and repeat 2 more times.

3. Plank with Shoulder Taps

  • Start in a push-up position, with your hands directly under your shoulders and your arms extended so you are in the “up” position of a push-up. Take one hand and reach it up and across your body to touch the opposite shoulder. Place your hand back down, and repeat with the other hand. While you reach across to tap your shoulder, maintain a stable core and pelvis. Aim for 10-12 taps per hand, and repeat 2-3 times with 60-second rests in between each.

4. YTWL Shoulder Exercise

  • Lie face down on a mat with arms extended forward in a Y position. Lift arms off the ground, and form a “T” by moving your extended arms out to the sides, creating a straight line from one hand to the other. Then, still keeping your arms off the ground, form a “W” by bending your elbows slightly, creating a 45-degree angle on each side. Finally, form an “L” shape, by forming a 90-degree angle with your elbow. Then lower your arms down back to the “Y” starting position. Complete 8-10 repetitions.
